I don't get around much...

Yeah, Pere Ubu played in town last night, at the Beachland Ballroom, performing their album "The Modern Dance," but I didn't get over there. Dan Rourke, however, did, and you can read his essay by clicking on the header. Good to hear that David Thomas is moving into Hackman territory (as long as he's not in a towel)...

Here's a recent clip of the band:

(No, sorry, they had it pulled.)

Try this instead:

Also of note, Roky Erickson is in town tonight. Ain't that a kick in the head.
So click your fingers, applauding the play...

Purportedly, David Thomas and Peter Laughner wanted to record a fake Texas psych 45 under the name of The Fatalistics, and then have it "discovered"; a kind of Borgesian ruse, or just a prankster's cheat...at any rate, Television early on regularly performed "Fire Engine," a song by The Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Roky's old band, inspiring Laughner to play it with his band Friction (not to be confused with the Japanese band, founded by Reck, formerly of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, with Cleveland's own Bradly Field), or was it with Peter and the Wolves?

Jim Jones once told me that when Ubu was on tour in Europe once, they had occasion to meet Nico, and she referred to them as "Ubu boys"...
